Custom emojis for your community
Upload your own emoji set; members type :slug: to use them in posts, comments, and chat.
Custom emojis are a fun way to give your community its own visual vocabulary. Once uploaded, anyone in the community can drop them into posts, comments, and chat messages using :slug: syntax.
Uploading custom emojis (owners + admins)
- Go to Community settings β Emojis.
- Click Upload emoji.
- Pick a short lowercase slug (e.g.
partyparrot,llama_dance). Letters, numbers, and underscores only. - Upload an image (PNG with transparent background works best, 128β512px).
- Save. The emoji is immediately usable.
Using emojis as a member
Type :emojislug: anywhere β post body, comment, reply, chat message β and it'll render as the inline image when posted. The full list of available emojis is at the bottom of Community settings β Emojis (members can view, can't edit).
Where they render
- Post bodies (feed + post detail)
- Comments and replies
- Community chat messages
DMs don't substitute community emojis β they're community-scoped by design.
Tips
- Keep slugs short and memorable. Two words max.
- Transparent backgrounds blend in with both light and dark mode.
- Removing an emoji doesn't unrender it from existing posts β the image URL is still valid until you delete the underlying file.
